Sandy White’s Classic Trilogy.

Sandy White's Classic Trilogy.

Back when I was about thirteen I had a ZX Spectrum. Please bear in mind that, at the time, this was a really cool bit of kit to own…

Out of all the games that I had (and there were a lot because I used to copy them tape-to-tape) my favourites were by Sandy White.

As far as I know, Sandy White only ever made three games for the Spectrum; but they were all very good and well ahead of their time. The first one was ‘Ant Attack’; I think that it was set in ‘Antchester ‘if I remember right. Your task was to rescue ten girls from a 3D city. It was all made in black and white with everything built in blocks. The block-style buildings were created with Sandy White’s own ‘Soft-Solid’ technique.

Soft-Solid was used for the second release; ‘Zombie Zombie’. This was my absolute favourite of the three games. In this your objective was to entice increasing numbers of zombies to follow you along a wall and fall to their (un)deaths. The zombies were distinctively olive coloured and the game used the tune to ‘ten green bottles’…

The final Sandy White release was called; ‘I, of The Mask’. This game was also in 3D but it was nothing like its predecessors. Your job was to find your way through a maze and collect the different body-parts to a robot.

These games are all pretty laughable by today’s standards but they were brilliant fun at the time. However, many of the more modern games are very similar in terms of gameplay.

If you enjoy retro stuff then get on Google and look them up. There is even a ZX Spectrum emulator that can be downloaded for free.
