I never thought I would see the day when someone would dare stand up and say that Del Boy was not David Jason’s defining role, but there it is, that day has come!
I really don’t know what to say, but I’ll tell you one thing—this really got me thinking. Apparently there are many people out there feel the same…a real can of worms has been opened with this one!
What a dilemma!
How do you fairly compare the genius that is wheeler-dealer Del Boy with the unorthodox detective Frost? You can’t! That’s the problem. I defy anyone who can do so without being biased towards one or the other and making the battle entirely unfair. In a bid to sort this complicated issue out in my head, once and for all, I have made a list of fors and againsts for both characters. But who will be victor?
Del Boy: charming, daft, witty, owner of the best fur-coats in London and we’d better not forget the three-wheeled van from hell!—everyone’s favourite cockney diamond geezer: and winner of best TV saying in history, too: “he who dares Rodders, he who dares!” (And variations thereof…)
Frost: grumpy old man possessing his own unique ’charm’. Able to solve cases which are both funny and serious all at the same time–and while insulting even his superior officer! Oh, and also owner of the most dapper grey combed-back hair in television, of course.
Looking at all the facts together, on one page, I think it’s going to have to be Del Boy for me. Now, if granddad would have found his way into Frost things may well have turned out differently. Who knows? Maybe Frost will return one day–With Rodders as the apprentice detective and Granddad in supporting role!? (We can but hope–But Rock And Chips was thought a good idea, so who knows?)
